The Orans

The Orans is one panels on the highly decorated Kilnaruane Pillar Stone dating from the 6th Century. The Pillar stone is located South West of Bantry in West Cork, Ireland.

A timeless figure in prayer. Cloaked in a simple, ankle length robe, the figure stands upright, arms raised in devotion. The two clearly defined feet mark him as a holy man of early Christianity. 

The image reaches even further back, before Christian hands shaped stone, the Orans echos the form of Osiris, the ancient sun God. In this pagan and Christian intertwine.
